Why we need to transform?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGCJ46vyR9o A Vision of Student’s Today

1.) Increased Access to information or connectedness leads to greater awareness, hyperawareness,
a. differing perceptions of information
i. information is plentiful
ii. no need for sage or holder of information
iii. They don’t believe in getting information from the sage on the stage, since they HAVE access now to all the information in the world
iv. As UCF RITE research stated, students are looking for facilitators of learning
v. More opportunities for peer learning -- Learning not from teacher, but from “others” from “each other”
vi. Help students find the information -- Teacher’s – don’t have to do it all yourself, don’t re-invent the wheel, a lecture on Giddens already exists on YouTube (and he made it) – Help students find the source and evaluate it, critically analyze it
vii. hording info, sage on the stage --I won the teaching award, good luck figuring out what I do – Open pedagogy – share our pedagogy

b. Information overload
i. Need help critically analyzing information, organizating and sorting information

2.) Students are less concerned with making money, prestige, and more concerned about the dollar spent.
Awareness of costs – tuition, textbooks, education, students
Making $$ - - not a concern – PEW Survey supports this where the concerns of millenials, although not religious, is to be a good parent, stay married, and help others….

3.) Awareness of economic times
College degree /= job

4.) They are overwhelmd by the world’s problems since they are more aware of them – they want to solve them, so they want courses with real life problem skills.
Learning that relates to live, creative, individuals

5.) Time is valuable
a. Value of time --26.5 hours per day, Seat time
b. want effective and efficient processes
c. Forgoing tenture (chronicle article), don’t need “seat time” in the office (12 hour days) because they are more efficient -- Communication Dept – concerned about young tenure track faculty commitment -- Faculty have changing interests – focus on quality of research not quantity (Chronicle) article; who cares about tenure, $, prestige? Older generation – because of e-mail and teaching online we must work late hours, course and a half, my discipline is different because we need grants – not one person from the younger generation responded

Our connected present and future demands our transformation.

In the competitive marketplace of education, we must harness these connections…
